Cape art picks: February 24 2012

The group exhibition Outside The Lines attempts to expand the framework of abstraction beyond its formal perimeters and allow for the inclusion of a myriad subjects and contextual concerns.

Lyndi Sales and Daniella Mooney’s work explores the slipstream in which folkloristic and handicraft-orientated everyday practices intersect with formal constructivist abstraction. Morné Visagie and Rodan Kane Hart combine poetic abstraction and physical experience to create a voyage through transitional urban spaces. Mbongeni Dlamini highlights the political potential of abstraction by drawing attention to the polarities and grey areas created by colour in a racial context. Alexandra Karakashian subverts the notion of oil painting to address growing environmental concerns about non-renewable energy and industrial waste. Other participating artists include Michele Mathison, Chloe Rëid and Anna Stielau.
