Referee Assaulted By Fan In Goalless Draw

The official showed the Bafana Bafana midfielder a straight red card for a late challenge on Tshepo Liphoko in the 33rd minute holding up play at the Moses Mabhida Stadium for a few minutes.

The game was further delayed moments later when Mfiki was attacked by a fan who somehow managed to breach security and strike him once before being escorted away by security personnel.

But the more than 30 000, most disgruntled, Chiefs fans watched their team fight on to claim a draw, one that put them eight points ahead of Orlando Pirates in the title race with five games to play, although the Buccaneers do have two games in hand.

Amakhosi had begun the match anything like the current log leaders as they were put under heavy pressure early on.

Agonising
As early as the first minute Tefu Mashamaite was yellow-carded for hauling down Luck Nguzana 20-yards out, with the resultant Jabulani Nene free-kick curled agonisingly past the left upright.

At the other end, former Arrows playmaker Siyabonga Nkosi shot straight at Nkosingiphile Gumede and a Lehlohonolo Majoro strike was ruled out for off-side in Chiefs' only real threatening moments.

Thamsanqa Gabuza then broke forward nicely but opted to go for goal himself instead of passing and ended up skewing horribly wide.

Liphoko had Abafana Bes'thende's best chance in the 11th minute when he spun his way round on the left, cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot that forced Itumeleng Khune to acrobatically turn away the attempt for a corner.

Norman Smith was next to worry the visitors and after testing Khune with a long-range strike, he showed a good burst of speed to beat three players, before his shot was deflected wide.

Another chance
Chiefs finally created another chance just after the half-hour when Majoro pulled away from his marker onto the right and shot agonisingly wide across the face of goal.

Then came the two disruptions, the red card incident occurring right in front of the Arrows bench with Majoro and Khune also collecting bookings for their protestation.

Mfiki was struck close to the centre circle and when the game resumed, the visitors appeared to be galvanised by the incident with George Lebese and Siphiwe Tshabalala both wasting half chances before the interval.

After the restart, Mashamaite could have put the visitors in front with a header that dropped wide following fine Tshabalala free-kick that caught Gumede in no man's land.

Stuart Baxter's men continued to dominate but squandered another chance to go in front when Bernard Parker's 20-yard free-kick dipped inches over just short of the hour mark.

Moving together
Arrows finally managed to string a move together in the 75th minute when Liphoko was played in on the left, but the winger's cross-goal attempt flew wide.

Chiefs still looked the more dangerous side, though, and Siboniso Gaxa should have done better than scooping over after he broke free down the right and only had keeper Gumede to beat.

At the other end, Liphoko's long-range attempt forced Khune to punch wide and close to the end, Gumede saved comfortably from Majoro and Tsepo Masilela.

Tshabalala then struck the side-netting as he powered into the box at the death with Arrows clinging on. – Sapa
