Rapper Cassper Nyovest is performing at the inaugural NickFest, hosted by children’s television channel Nickelodeon. NickFest is a family-friendly music festival that is being hosted for the first time in South Africa. Ku Sale Izibongo pays tribute to the cultural activists who were murdered during a raid by the South African Defence Force on June 14 1985 in Botswana. Musician Steve Dyer, who was also in exile in Botswana, composed music to remember those who died. The composition will premiere this weekend with poetry from Professor Keorapetse Kgositsile, Thandi Ntuli on piano, keyboards and voice, Sisonke Xonti on tenor saxophone, Lwanda Gogwana on trumpet, Amaeshi Ikechi on bass and Lungile Kunene on drums, with special guest star Jonas Gwangwa. Tshwane-based artist Mxolisi Vusimuzi Beauchamp reimagines “contemporary icons as lived experience in our social psyche” by tackling ideas of “freedom of expression on the verge of treason” in his latest exhibition, Paradyse of the Damned. Beauchamp, who is known for spray-painting and stencilling, has used silkscreening in Paradyse of the Damned. Réunion’s masters of percussive maloya, Grèn Sémé, are heading to South Africa’s playground, Durban, to perform at the Zakifo Muzik Festival. They’ll be sharing the stage with music acts Nje (Réunion), John Wizards (Cape Town), Flavia Coelho (Brazil), 340ml Sound System (Mozambique) and Epic Empire (France) on June 12. Archive images of the late Neville Dubow will be on display in the exhibition The Thinking Eye. Dubow, who was a photographer, died in August 2008 and this exhibition is a tribute to his life and work, spanning the years 1971 to 2001. The Thinking Eye features his photographs, drawings and memorabilia from manuscripts and archives at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Iziko South African National Gallery collection.
