The man, widely thought to be South Africa’s most wanted bank robber, has been arrested in Johannesburg, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said on Wednesday.
Lucky Vusi Dube, commonly known as “Sthakathi”, was arrested by Crime Intelligence and Hawks officers at his home in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Tuesday. He was found with 14 live rounds of ammunition for a handgun.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Dube was wanted for a series of alleged bank robberies in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
“The members were led to the suspect’s house by another man who they had arrested at Jabulani Hostel in connection with a robbery in Bramley.
“Dube is linked to the robbery of Standard Bank in Balfour, Mpumalanga, Bidvest Bank in Randburg, ABSA Bank in Sandton, Absa Bank in Vereeniging, Nedbank in Johannesburg Central, as well as another ABSA Bank in Norkempark, Johannesburg,” Mulaudzi said. “All these robberies were committed in 2014.”
According to the Hawks, he is also linked to a Nedbank robbery in Sandton in 2006, as well as a 2013 robbery in Vereeniging.
The suspect appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing charges of possession of unlicensed ammunition. His case was postponed to May 6 pending the verification of his address and status in the country, as well as the centralisation of all his alleged cases. – African News Agency (ANA)
