The 11am sitting of the National Assembly was cancelled as a result of the strike by staff on Tuesday
Parliament’s ad hoc committee to select a new public protector will on Tuesday announce the names of nominees and applicants for the job.
Advocate Thuli Madonsela was among the nominations, even though by law she was limited to only one term in office. Her seven-year term would end in mid-October.
The shortlist of candidates would be tabled in Parliament by the end of August.
The new Public Protector was expected to assume office by November 1, but this would depend on other factors.
The chosen candidate might have to give notice at their current place of work, and Parliament might not get the required 60% majority, or 240 votes, in a sitting to confirm the candidate. – News24
