Confusion over SAPS, Scorpions integration

Uncertainty surround government’s proposals for merging the Scorpions with the police organised crime units — under South African Police Service control. Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula told Parliament on Tuesday: “The Scorpions will be dissolved and the organised crime unit of the police will be phased out and a new amalgamated unit will be created.”

Mike Stofile caught offside

South African Rugby Union (Saru) deputy president Mike Stofile faces questions after Saru’s audit committee found he had no mandate to discuss the future of former Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer with him. Stofile, who has ambitions to defeat president Oregan Hoskins at Saru’s presidential elections next month, met Meyer on January 22 in Johannesburg.

Agliotti fingers Gauteng director general

Gauteng’s top official, provincial Director General Mogopodi Mokoena, co-owned a company with Brett Kebble’s murderer, Clint Nassif, and accepted a R250 000 cheque from him. Mokoena’s links with Nassif were among issues raised by Glenn Agliotti in an affidavit the National Prosecuting Authority submitted to court last week in response to Jackie Selebi’s application to block his prosecution.

Pikoli purge loses steam

Government’s fiery bid to get rid of suspended prosecutions chief Vusi Pikoli is slowly losing steam, with indications that a shutdown of Frene Ginwala’s inquiry might be on the cards. President Thabo Mbeki suspended Pikoli four months ago pending an inquiry into his “fitness to hold office”.

Mbete to Zuma’s rescue

The appointment of ANC national chairperson Baleka Mbete to run the political committee in Parliament will be the first step in winning over ANC MPs to support the quest to defend ANC president Jacob Zuma. Mbete will replace Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota, who is the current chairperson of this powerful committee.

Writing’s on the wall for Selebi

Police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi will be charged as early as next week should the National Prosecuting Authority have its way. A range of sources with knowledge of the investigation says the panel appointed to review the decision to charge Selebi concurs that he has a case to answer. The review panel submitted its report to acting prosecutions head Mokotedi Mpshe on Thursday last week.
