The Winter Olympics alpine ski competition was getting back on track on Monday after a snowy Sunday. Under bright, sunny skies, the men’s giant slalom was first up, followed by the women’s super-G postponed from the previous day. In the evening Canada takes on Sweden in the women’s ice hockey final and there is the climax to the ice dance.

Tiger Woods makes a rare appearance outside the United States when he bids for a third time to win the Dubai Desert Classic in the United Arab Emirates from Thursday. Woods has tried twice previously to win the Middle East’s premier golf tournament, an integral part of the European PGA Tour’s early-season schedule.

Football legends Pele and Maradona were headlining the guest list for the official unveiling in Doha on Thursday of the world’s biggest covered sports dome. The Aspire Academy of Sports Excellence venue is the work of French architect Roger Taillibert and funded by the oil and natural gas revenues which have turned this tiny Gulf state into one of the richest countries in the world.
Amelie Mauresmo has tried to play down the Yannick Noah effect as she sets her sights on breaking her Roland Garros jinx at the French Open, which gets under way on Monday. Mauresmo has been touted as a potential winner in Paris since she burst on to the scene at the Australian Open in 1999.
