The four convicted murderers of the Van der Merwe family, two of whom were also convicted of rape, were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Circuit High Court in Secunda, Mpumalanga, on Tuesday. The men were also sentenced for other crimes, amounting to 240 years’ imprisonment — but the sentences will run concurrently.
Ostrich meat is still safe for consumption despite the outbreak of avian flu on two farms in the Eastern Cape, the Klein Karoo group, which represents producers of ostrich meat and ostrich products, said on Tuesday. A spokesperson said the outbreak of the disease has been contained to the two farms in the Middleton area.

Human error and adverse weather conditions caused the airplane crash which claimed the life of former national cricket captain Hansie Cronje in June 2002, the Civil Aviation Authority said on Thursday. ”The report indicates the probable causes of the accident to be human factor-related, with weather and mechanical as well as technological factors contributing,” said the CAA.
Last week husband-killer Anieta Ferreira was released from prison, virtually a free woman. The decision by the Supreme Court of Appeal to commute Ferreira’s life sentence has been hailed a victory for abused women. But criminologist Irma Labuschagne says a strong message has to be sent out that not all women who murder their husbands or partners will get lenient sentences.
The domestic airline Sun Air, operating between Johannesburg and Cape Town, was liquidated on Tuesday and all flights have been cancelled until further notice, the managing director said. Rowald Kresfelder said the airline was liquidated at 5pm after suffering losses and developing a cash flow problem during the past four months.
Somewhere in Soweto outside Johannesburg this week a mother spoke of her anguish at the rape of her three-year-old daughter and her shock and disbelief when the alleged rapist walked out of court a free man because the child could not utter a word against him.
