Rafael Nadal hit the practice court with 48 hours to go before his start at the year-end Masters Cup in Shanghai, determined to fulfil the goal of ending this season on a high note. Nadal, losing finalist last weekend in the Paris final to David Nalbandian, said he wants to put a winning stamp on this season.

Federer flowers in Miami

Roger Federer showed signs of full recovery from a shock loss this month as he rolled over American teenager Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-3 into the third round of the Miami Masters on a rainy Saturday. The Swiss polished his tournament record to 25 wins and six defeats after winning the last two editions comprising a dozen matches.

Nadal will ‘play in pain’ at Madrid Masters

Kim Clijsters can thank the bad wrist which kept her away from tennis for much of 2004 with helping turn her into a Grand Slam champion on her fifth attempt in a final. ”I think everything has definitely made me a physically stronger person,” said the 22-year-old who banked a record-setting ,2-million payday for winning the New York women’s title.

Kim Clijsters persevered through five failed match-point chances to come good on her sixth for a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 semifinal upset of top seed Maria Sharapova on Friday at the ,75-million United States Open. The Belgian fourth seed will play on Saturday night against French 12th seed Mary Pierce.

Federer turns up the heat

Roger Federer steadied after a slow start to beat German Nicolas Kiefer 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and move into the third round of the ,45-million Cincinnati Masters on Wednesday. The world number one from Switzerland lost serve twice in the first set against an opponent whom he’d beaten in five of their eight previous meetings.

Nadal upstages mentor Moya

Rafael Nadal didn’t let a jammed finger deter him from an opening-round hard-court victory, overcoming long-time mentor Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-7 (0-7) 6-3 on Tuesday at the ,2-million Montreal Masters. The 19-year-old from the Spanish island of Mallorca needed treatment on a finger on his left hitting hand.

Moodie continues winning streak

South African Wesley Moodie beat the heat on Monday in a steamy struggle over Jean-Rene Lisnard of France 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round of the  000 RCA Championships in Indianapolis. Moodie was the surprise winner of the Wimbledon doubles title this month, alongside Australian Stephen Huss.
