Santos, Wits in dull draw

Santos moved out of the relegation zone and occupy the 13th spot on the Premier Soccer League log after sharing the spoils with Wits University in their 0-0 draw on Wednesday night. Wits, who were the hosts of the unimpressive match in front of about 500 fans, remain 11th on the table.

Sundowns humble Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns humbled the high-flying Orlando Pirates with a 4-1 drubbing in an enthralling Castle Premier Soccer League match played at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday. Downs came into the match as clear underdogs in this much-talked-about encounter but they were able to soak up all the first-half pressure exerted by Pirates.

Chiefs lucky to get a point

Kaizer Chiefs were lucky to get a point after their one-all draw with Dynamos in their otherwise ding-dong Castle Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. Amakhosi were a shadow of the mean club who whipped Bloemfontein Celtic 4-1 in a league match at the same venue over the weekend.

Boxing SA chairperson Mthobi Tyamzashe is spending sleepless nights worrying about the dwindling number of white boxers in the country. South Africa currently only has six white professional prize fighters. They include Anton Nel (heavyweight champion), Andre Thysse (super middleweight holder) and Daniel Bruwer.

Manning Rangers travelled all the way from Durban hoping for a win and three points against Wits University at Milpark Stadium on Wednesday night. But the Mighty Maulers had to settle for a point after their one-all draw. Wits remain eighth on the table. It was their eighth draw from 13 games.

Pandemonium broke out inside the Big Top Arena at Carnival City when angry boxing fans protested the dubious verdict that favoured Cassius Baloyi over Lehlohonolo Ledwaba. Baloyi was completely outclassed by a hungrier, determined and superbly conditioned Ledwaba.

Kaizer Chiefs continued their dominance over Dynamos when they handed the Dynamites a 4-0 drubbing at the FNB Stadium on Saturday in a quarterfinal Coca-Cola Cup match. Chiefs earned their place in the semifinals while the Limpopo-based club settled for R200 000 for their participation in the R2-million competition.

Bafana finally beat Nigeria

Nigeria’s domination over South Africa came to an end on Wednesday night when Bafana Bafana beat the Super Eagles 2-1 in the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup at Ellis Park Stadium. The Super Eagles brought their third string squad after the late withdrawal of nine of their first team players.
