Jo’burg waste recycler runs into trouble

A waste-recycling plant in Johannesburg — described as a danger to the health of employees and the environment — was ordered on Thursday to comply with new regulations or face closure. ”You are in deep trouble. My advice to you is no smart talk,” said Gauteng’s environment minister, Khabisa Mosunkutu.

Africa and Asia push for ‘new world order’

African and Asian leaders, representing two-thirds of the global population, met in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Friday to discuss ways of achieving ”a new world order”. The talks were part of the Asia-Africa Summit co-hosted by Indonesia and South Africa. In his address, Mbeki urged leaders to use the summit to build and strengthen cooperation.

Africa ‘ready to tackle its own problems’

President Thabo Mbeki described the new African era as the season of hope for the continent and one in which Africans are prepared to take care of their own. He was addressing the 26th Singapore Lecture on the island during his one-day state visit on Thursday. He was invited to give the lecture, one that former president Nelson Mandela was also ”honoured” to provide.

Langa unhappy with rate of transformation

Deputy Chief Justice Pius Langa expressed his impatience with the speed of transformation of the judiciary during his interview for the post of chief justice in Cape Town on Monday. Quizzed by fellow judges on the Judicial Service Commission and the minister and deputy minister of justice, Langa dismissed reports that he was a transformation ”gradualist”.

Manuel on booze, houses and suntanning

Whether drowning your sorrows or celebrating your fiscal gains in 2005, both will be more expensive as Minister of Finance Trevor Manual has announced increases in excise duties on most alcoholic beverages on Wednesday during his Budget address. Also, from March 1, buying a house will cost buyers less as Manuel announced the reduction of transfer duties on properties.

Tsunami: Four South Africans remain missing

Four South Africans are still unaccounted for following their disappearance during the Asian tsunami disaster, the Department of Foreign Affairs said in Pretoria on Friday. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sue van der Merwe said the South African government is still working closely with Interpol to trace the missing people.
