Art collectors opened their wallets on Thursday and shelled out ,6-million at a Valentine’s Day charity auction spearheaded by rocker Bono and British artist Damien Hirst to benefit the fight against HIV/Aids in Africa. Spirited bidding and prices far in excess of pre-sale estimates marked ”The (Red) Auction” at Sotheby’s, where all but one of the 83 contemporary works found buyers.

Led by a record-breaking Jeff Koons sculpture and a -million Francis Bacon canvas, Sotheby’s roared back from a dismal Impressionist sale to score the highest total in its history at a contemporary and postwar art auction on Wednesday.
Post-war art broke the -million mark for a second straight night on Wednesday as Christie’s sold a record-smashing -million-worth of contemporary art, the second-highest total for any auction in history. This time it was Andy Warhol’s Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I), which soared to ,72-million.
