Animals from the Kruger National Park, including ”protected species and even lions”, are being hunted and killed in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve (TPNR) in order to balance the books, according to United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa. He said the hunting has been happening since the boundary fence between the Kruger park and the adjacent TPNR was taken down.
The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) on Monday criticised the South African government for not being vocal enough about the Zimbabwe government’s clampdown on the independent media, warning that the country’s upcoming elections won’t be free.
While it is unlikely that any of the judges in the Constitutional Court will be wearing ”Black Labour — White Guilt” T-shirts under their robes on Tuesday, the offending shirt will probably not be far from their minds, as they consider whether it really is a cut-and-dried case of trademark infringement.

Beggars at major intersections in Johannesburg were pulled off the streets on Thursday by the Johannesburg Metro Police in a crackdown forming part of Operation Token Days, which targets the breaking of by-laws. Loud voices, screaming and sirens made a telephone conversation with a metro police spokesperson virtually impossible.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is about to embark on its second fact-finding mission to Zimbabwe. The question is whether this mission will be a success or whether the group of about 20 delegates will be deported, as the first mission was in December last year. The <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i> fired 10 questions at Patrick Craven, the editor of Cosatu’s magazine <i>The Shopsteward</i>.

The Zimbabwean government has warned the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) not to undertake a mission to Zimbabwe on the same terms as its previous visit. At the end of last year, a Cosatu delegation was summarily ordered out of Zimbabwe. ”If they try to do what they did last time [at the end of last year], they should be prepared to face the consequences,” Minister of Home Affairs Kembo Mohadi said.

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change is caught in a catch-22 situation in deciding whether to participate in Zimbabwe’s upcoming general elections, party leader Morgan Tsvangirai said in Johannesburg on Tuesday. ”We are damned if we do, and damned if we don’t,” he told participants in a seminar on opposition parties and democracy in Africa.

South Africa might be the focus of African soccer when it comes to the 2010 World Cup, but its players do not seem to be among Africa’s best. The nominations of the MTN Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards were announced on Tuesday, and the shortlist contains no South Africans.
