Tropical Storm Ernesto hit North Carolina near hurricane strength on Thursday, flooding some coastal areas in both Carolina states though there were no immediate reports of casualties. The centre of Ernesto made landfall at Long Beach, sustaining winds of around 113kph, just short of the 119kph needed for hurricane status, the United States National Hurricane Centre said.
Olympic champion Justin Gatlin was banned for up to eight years after agreeing that his positive drugs test constituted a doping violation, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) said on Tuesday. The actual length of the ban, which came into effect on August 15, will be determined by an arbitration panel.
