At least nine people were wounded and dozens arrested on Wednesday as police battled opposition supporters on Tanzania’s volatile Zanzibar archipelago during the country’s national elections. One man was shot when security forces fired live rounds over the heads of demonstrators.

Zanzibar opposition leader Seif Sharif Hamad on Tuesday claimed victory in the hotly contested race for the presidency of the semi-autonomous Tanzanian archipelago amid new clashes over weekend elections. ”Now, I know I am the winner,” Seif Sharif Hamad of the Civic United Front told reporters.

Vote counting was under way on Monday after elections to choose a president and lawmakers in the popular tourist destination of Zanzibar were marred, like previous ballots, by violence and fraud. Opposition presidential candidate Seif Shariff Hamad claimed a strong early lead against Amani Karume late on Sunday, the current leader of Tanzania’s semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar.

At least 29 people were injured over the weekend when supporters of rival parties clashed in Tanzania’s semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar ahead of October elections, police and witnesses said on Monday. Opposing parties’ supporters fought with metal bars and stones after leaving separate campaign rallies late on Sunday.
