The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court charges that ”the whole state apparatus” of Sudan is implicated in crimes against humanity in the Darfur region, linking the government directly with the feared janjaweed militia.
A new war could break out between Eritrea and Ethiopia if the United Nations peacekeeping mission that has been prevented from patrolling both sides of the border withdraws entirely, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned on Wednesday. The two neighbours have been feuding over their border since Eritrea gained independence in 1993.

United Nations peacekeepers resupplied their food but were running low on fuel on Tuesday after being forced to withdraw all personnel to the Eritrean capital, unable to get permission to cross into Ethiopia. Eritrean authorities ordered the peacekeeping mission patrolling the border to ”regroup” at Asmara.

The United Nations Security Council opened the door on Friday to new economic, political or military sanctions against Sudan because of an attack by its troops on a UN peacekeeping convoy earlier this week. The council said it ”condemns in the strongest possible terms” Monday’s attack on UN peacekeepers by ”elements of the Sudanese armed forces”.

More than two-thirds of the world’s polar bears will be killed off by 2050 — the species completely gone from Alaska — because of thinning sea ice from global warming in the Arctic, United States government scientists forecast on Friday.
Producers of half the world’s greenhouse gases are angling for more private investment to create cleaner energy technologies and help slow global warming. The White House said its talks with Australia, China, India, Japan and South Korea will enhance rather than replace the Kyoto climate treaty that President George Bush rejected because of its mandatory cuts in carbon dioxide, methane and other gases.
