New Zealand overpower Canada

Lou Vincent found his form as New Zealand made it three World Cup wins out of three in Group C with a 114-run success against Canada at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in Gros on Thursday. Vincent’s 101 was the centrepiece of New Zealand’s World Cup record score of 363 for five.

Shamed Flintoff denies drink problem

Andrew Flintoff has denied having a drink problem after losing the England vice-captaincy at the World Cup after a night of boozy antics saw him dropped for the match against Canada. Flintoff, the star of England’s 2005 Ashes success, was one of six players fined following a late-night drinking session.

England embarrassed despite beating Canada

England tried to made light of Andrew Flintoff’s absence with a 51-run victory against Canada in their World Cup Group C match on Sunday. England made 279 for six after being sent in but, despite reducing Canada to 65 for four, were unable to bowl out the minnows without their pace-bowling all-rounder.

Bowlers set for tough World Cup

Bowlers have been complaining that cricket is a batsmen’s game for arguably as long as the game has been played. But when it comes to the one-day format they may well have a point. Scores have rocketed in the last few years, with the nine highest totals by a team winning after batting second in limited overs international history all achieved since the turn of the century.

Late strike keeps Arsenal in FA Cup

Kolo Toure maintained Arsenal’s hopes of winning the FA Cup by heading home a late equaliser against Premiership rivals Bolton to secure a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Bolton, Arsenal’s bogey team, had gone ahead in this fourth-round tie after a goalless first-half through Kevin Nolan’s 50th minute shot, which capped a well-worked move from the visitors at the Emirates Stadium.

United in control after three-goal victory

Manchester United remained six points clear at the top of the English Premiership after a 3-1 win against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday. Reigning champions Chelsea stayed second with a 4-0 home victory over Wigan, while Liverpool remained third after a 3-0 win away to basement club Watford.

Arjen Robben’s injury time goal saw reigning champions Chelsea maintain the pressure on Premiership leaders Manchester United with a dramatic 3-2 win away to Wigan on Saturday. It looked as if United, 3-0 winners away to Aston Villa earlier on Saturday, would be left with a four-point lead after Wigan striker Emile Heskey scored twice to make it 2-2.

Robinson resigns as England coach

Andy Robinson lost his job as head coach of the England rugby team on Wednesday with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) announcing he was standing down with immediate effect. ”On behalf of the RFU I am announcing that … Andy Robinson OBE is standing down from the position of head coach,” said RFU elite rugby director Rob Andrew in a statement.
