The government’s much-anticipated Operational Plan for Comprehensive HIV and Aids Care and Treatment, which provides for the rollout of anti-retrovirals, was presented to Parliament’s portfolio committee on health on Tuesday. The plan aims to provide at least one anti-retroviral service point in every health district within a year.

Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang used the opportunity of a parliamentary media briefing to urge journalists again to spread her message that Aids sufferers should use olive oil, lemon and garlic to boost their immune systems. President Thabo Mbeki ended a whirlwind tour of KwaZulu-Natal by calling for peaceful elections. Mbeki had criss-crossed the province over the past three days, travelling into deep rural areas like Tugela Ferry in the midlands and Mahlabathini in northern KwaZulu-Natal — Inkatha Freedom Party stronghold.

President Thabo Mbeki’s arrival at a community imbizo in Tugela Ferry near Pietermaritzburg was delayed by Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters marching in front of the presidential convoy on Thursday. The marchers chanted that they were IFP warriors and that the African National Congress, which Mbeki heads, was not welcome.
