The enormous grey whale shark glides effortlessly in the murky waters off Donsol in the eastern Philippines, its distinctive pale yellow spotted back and fins clearly visible as excited tourists prepare to enter the water from nearby outrigger canoes. They swim to within a few metres of these gentle giants of the deep as their guide makes sure they give the whale shark plenty of room to move.

The threat of a possible terrorist attack was the main reason for postponing a South-east Asian summit due to start on Sunday on the Philippine island of Cebu, foreign ministry sources said. The Philippines government earlier blamed a building tropical storm in the Pacific for calling off the summit.

Housewife Esperanza Marasigan wailed in despair as she searched for her missing relatives among the scores of people crushed to death in a stampede at a television game show in the Philippines on Saturday. ”Help us, help us. I think my sister is dead,” Marasigan cried, as hundreds of others milled around outside a Manila sports stadium that became a death trap for fans.
The first Philippine eagle born in captivity flew into conservation history books on Thursday when it was released into the wild, raising hopes for the future of one of the world’s most endangered birds. The bird, a 15-month-old male eagle named Kabayan, was released from his cage at the Mount Apo nature reserve.
