The last unpublished work of one of the 20th century’s greatest writers may be close to being destroyed in fulfilment of the author’s last wishes, his son has hinted. Vladimir Nabokov requested in his will that his unfinished novel, The Original of Laura, be destroyed on his death.

Germany’s politicians are locked in a heated debate after the defence minister signalled his readiness to shoot down hijacked planes at the risk of killing innocent civilians in order to avert a wider disaster. The comments of Josef Jung of the Christian Democrats have unleashed a passionate debate across the parties and led to calls for his resignation this week in an emotional session in the Bundestag, the German Parliament.
In public, at least, they seem remarkably unfazed by what they have done. And in some senses, of course, they needn’t be. They are a loving couple, who have been together for seven years and want to be with no one else. They have had four children. Beyond these details, however, the story gets more troubling. Patrick and Susan Stubing, who live in Zwenkau, near Leipzig, Germany, are brother and sister.
