Concern over Freitag as SA athletes shine

Amid a string of dazzling track performances from Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Geraldine Pillay, Alwyn Myburgh and Leigh Julius, a cloud of concern hung over Jacques Freitag, who struggled with a sore back and managed a 2,25m winning clearance at the final Absa Series meeting at Pilditch in Pretoria on Friday night.

Pistorius breaks world record in Potch

Oscar Pistorius, the sensational schoolboy sprinter, broke his world 200m record for double below-the-knee amputees in his first major race against able-bodied athletes at the opening Absa Series meeting in Potchefstroom on Friday night. The matriculant from Pretoria Boys’ High surged to 21,83 seconds in ideal conditions.

Super Schoeman smashes record

Roland Schoeman, who spearheaded the relay team to a world-record gold at the Athens Olympics, was in super mode with a South African short-course record of 47,12 seconds in the 100m freestyle at the Fina World Cup in Durban on Friday night. ”Swimming’s got to be better than rugby and cricket for South Africans right now,” grinned Schoeman.

Eighth Paralympic gold medal for SA

Nicholas Newman won South Africa’s eighth gold medal in the morning session of Athens Paralympic action at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday, while Natalie du Toit swam her second world record in the 200m individual medley at the Aquatic Centre. Newman threw the javelin 38,09m for gold with his first throw.

Another gold for Natalie

Natalie du Toit, South Africa’s star performer at the Athens Paralympics, continued her gold-medal onslaught at the Aquatic Centre with a stunning Paralympic record victory in the 100m freestyle on Monday night. Meanwhile, wheelchair athlete Ernst van Dyk was cut off from a certain gold medal and table-tennis player Rosabelle Riese broke her left leg.

SA Paralympic athlete bumped up to silver

Cape Town’s visually impaired sprinter Nathan Meyer was moved up from bronze to silver for the Athens Paralympic 200m sprint final that he raced at the Olympic Stadium on Monday. There was still confusion on Tuesday as to what went down in the race. At the finish, Meyer appeared on the giant screen results as the winner of the gold medal.

Another Paralympic medal for SA

Scott Field, South Africa’s visually impaired swimmer, won his second silver medal of the Athens Paralympics when he finished a strong second in the men’s 400m freestyle at the Aquatic Centre on Monday evening. Field swam four minutes and 30,19 seconds against the 4:28,84 that earned Walter Wu of Canada the gold medal.
