SA Paralympic athlete bumped up to silver

Cape Town’s visually impaired sprinter Nathan Meyer was moved up from bronze to silver for the Athens Paralympic 200m sprint final that he raced at the Olympic Stadium on Monday.

There was still confusion on Tuesday as to what went down in the race. At the finish, Meyer appeared on the giant screen results as the winner of the gold medal, with the actual winner, Andre Andrade of Brazil, appearing in third place.

The United States’s Royal Mitchell was placed second at that stage, but by Tuesday he had been disqualified for some reason that could not be ascertained.

By the time Meyer — who ran 22,96 seconds to Andrade’s 22,70 — appeared on the rostrum for his silver at Tuesday’s medal ceremony, he was the only athlete in Paralympic history who could boast being the holder, at various stages after the race, of gold, silver and bronze for his event. — Sapa
