The resignation of veteran journalist John Perlman was accepted ”with regret” by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on Tuesday. Perlman was recognised as one of South Africa’s top current-affairs radio anchors, SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said in a statement.

African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma on Saturday denied meeting businessman Tokyo Sexwale to discuss the latter’s bid for leading the ruling party, as reported by the <i>Mail & Guardian</i>. Zuma said caution should be applied to "the use of faceless sources that have questionable motives".

British Airways (BA) has cancelled flights to South Africa pending a strike by cabin crew, it said on Friday. British Airways South Africa general manager Lin Glass said no flights from London to South Africa would be available on January 30 and 31. Flights from South Africa to London on February 2 and 3 would also be affected.

Zimbabwe’s government ”abandoned” its court case against Mail & Guardian chief executive Trevor Ncube on Thursday after it had prevented him at the end of last year from renewing his passport, claiming he was not a citizen of Zimbabwe.

Most opposition parties on Monday strongly condemned disgraced former African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Tony Yengeni’s release on parole from Malmesbury prison after serving only four months of a four-year sentence. The ANC urged, however, that Yengeni be allowed to resume his normal life.

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) reacted harshly on Friday to a charge of genocide laid against its head, Zackie Achmat, at the International Criminal Court earlier this week. In the 59-page criminal complaint, Achmat is accused of promoting the provision and use of antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV.
Four tourists were trapped for about two hours in darkness inside the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported on Sunday. The four were separated from their group, but when the cave lights went out, they were unable to find their way out.

James Brown, the legendary singer known as the ”Godfather of Soul”, has died in Atlanta, his agent said early on Monday. He was 73. Brown was seen as a crucial figure in the evolution of gospel and R&B into soul and funk. His music also spanned genres such as rock, jazz, reggae and hip-hop.

The Young Communist League (YCL) has expelled its national general secretary, Mazibuko Jara, for bringing the party into disrepute, news reports said on Saturday. The Mail & Guardian reported late last year that the YCL was considering suspending Jara for questioning the league’s support for Jacob Zuma in a paper he wrote.

The African National Congress (ANC) has expelled its parliamentary chief whip, Mbulelo Goniwe, for sexual harassment, it announced on Thursday. This means he will no longer be an MP, nor will he serve as chief whip, said Kader Asmal, who chaired the ANC national disciplinary committee probe into the allegation against Goniwe.
