The child moans and writhes in the narrow cot. The tiny ward stinks of urine. Flies buzz above his crumpled body, which is wracked by waves of pain. The doctor gently shifts him back into the centre of the bed, but he turns over almost immediately. His eyes are shut tight, and when he opens them, he doesn’t seem to know where he is.

Financial website Moneyweb reported on Wednesday that murdered mining magnate Brett Kebble was in the wrong place at the wrong time and said it appeared that his death was the result of a failed car hijacking, and not an assassination. Earlier, reports quoted business partner Andile Nkuhlu as saying Kebble had been the victim of a callous, premeditated crime.
Durban businessman Schabir Shaik was sentenced to an effective 15-year jail term for fraud and corruption in the city’s high court on Wednesday. Judge Hillary Squires likened corruption to a ”cancer eating away at the fabric of corporate probity” and said Shaik had ”lost his moral compass”.
Schabir Shaik left the Durban High Court on Thursday following his conviction on two counts of corruption and one of fraud relating to alleged irregular financial dealings with Deputy President Jacob Zuma. A spokesperson for Zuma said the deputy president will study the judgement before commenting.

African National Congress Youth League president Fikile Mbalula was stung into action this week after the Mail & Guardian raised concerns that politics and big business make uneasy bedfellows. Mbalula said that, according to the M&G, ”comrades are … not entitled to participate in the country’s economy”.

Keeran Sewsunker, the Durban Daily News reporter who was recently exposed as a serial plagiarist, has been fired following a disciplinary hearing. DITonline, a student news website based at the Durban Institute of Technology, first broke the story on August 27 and the Mail & Guardian Online published another story on September 23.
