The secret arms deal to acquire between R8-billion- and R14-billion-worth of highly sophisticated military transport aircraft should be suspended until a meeting is held by the parliamentary joint standing committee on defence, says official opposition Democratic Alliance MP Rafeek Shah.

Colin Powell has resigned as American Secretary of State, the department said on Monday. Powell (67), a former general, submitted his resignation to President George Bush on Friday, a senior department official said. The White House will announce the resignations of four members of Bush’s Cabinet on Monday, a spokesperson said.

Albert Mokoena has quit his position as acting CEO of the South African Football Association (Safa). His resignation was announced by acting Safa president Reuben Mahlalela on Monday. Mokoena has been the subject of media reports concerning his personal life and allegations that charges of intimidation had been laid against him.

After a weekend of high drama at Suzuka, the Japanese Grand Prix finished in a completely predictable way. World champion Michael Schumacher galloped to his 13th win of the season after comfortably leading from poll. His brother, Ralf, came second, giving Williams BMW their first poll finish in 11 races.
The United Nations’s top court, the International Court of Justice, ruled on Friday in The Hague that Israel’s separation barrier in the West Bank is in violation of international law and that the parts that encroach on Palestinian territory should be dismantled. The Palestinians hailed the judgement as an historic decision.
The Presidency has confirmed that the five-year contract of the Deputy Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Gill Marcus, expires on Wednesday. President Thabo Mbeki has consulted with Marcus about the renewal of her contract and she has indicated she would like to discuss other matters with the president regarding her future.

South African National Defence Force chief Siphiwe Nyanda on Thursday visited three soldiers at Pretoria’s 1 Military hospital who were injured while on peacekeeping duty in the Democratic Republic of Congo last week. One of the patients recounted how he and his colleagues were ambushed.
