Cooldrinks lose their fizz

While the world worries about an oversupply of carbon dioxide, caused by increasing emissions, in South Africa we’ve almost run out of carbon dioxide (CO2) to put into soft drinks. The national CO2 shortage has in the past four weeks affected normal production of Coca-Cola brands, and it is likely to persist right into the new year.

SANDF: We need bean counters

The South African peacekeeping mission in Burundi struggled for four years with chaotic accounting systems, inadequate logistical support and complex supply lines that left numerous vehicles and other equipment unserviceable, ammunition supplies vulnerable to theft and accident, and made it impossible for the mission to balance its books.

Cadillac’s comeback

Right-hand-driven Cadillacs will officially be available for sale in South Africa from February 2007, motor vehicle giant company General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has announced. GMSA plans are to release three new marques, the BLS mid-size sedan, SRX Crossover SUV and the STS full-size sedan.

Public Protector rules on breaches

The Public Protector has found that a failure by the Social Development Minister, Zola Skweyiya, to disclose an interest-free loan granted by Imvume chief executive officer Sandi Majali to his wife constituted a breach of the executive ethics code but his wife’s acceptance of the loan by itself did not.

Meet the Kebble ‘witness’

The homeless man who was arrested on Wednesday after claiming in a radio interview to have witnessed Brett Kebble’s murder, earlier gave the <i>Mail & Guardian</i> a description of the "killer". Lesego Amos Yekane (24) was interviewed by the <i>M&G</i> on Tuesday. He described the alleged killer as a "huge man with a bald head".

Matatiele: Threat to ‘hit streets’

Activists in Matatiele have threatened to “hit the streets again” over the area’s incorporation into the Eastern Cape, despite winning a Constitutional Court challenge to the Twelfth Amendment Act. And following the judgement the former cross-border municipalities of Moutse in Mpumalanga and Merafong in North West have said they will jointly file an urgent case against the government.

Workers interviewed by the Mail & Guardian this week generally supported the idea that the South African Communist Party should field its own candidates in elections, while expressing growing impatience with the ruling African National Congress. The M&G survey followed an SACP central committee meeting at the weekend, where party leaders discussed the option of going it alone in elections.

Five-way race for PAC presidency

Five members of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) will compete for the ailing party’s top job at this year’s national conference in Qwa Qwa between September 22 and 25. Current president Motsoko Pheko, his deputy Themba Godi, secretary general Mofihli Likotsi and former Azanian People’s Liberation Army commander Letlapa Mphahlele have all indicated an interest in the party’s presidency.
