The disappointment could be seen in many soccer lovers’ faces after Bafana Bafana’s disastrous 4-0 loss to Nigeria in the African Nations Cup on Saturday, and the comments came in thick and fast. The nation did expect a loss against Nigeria during the build-up to the game — but not by such a wide margin.

As Bafana Bafana prepare to meet old foes Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations, they are in need of new heroes. Whichever team wins on Saturday is likely to qualify from the group, the others will probably be booking early flights home. But Siyabonga Nomvete cannot be allowed to carry the team alone.

Bafana Bafana players have gone and done it again — just as the Ephraim ”Shakes” Mashaba saga came to a close last week. The players in Tunisia started a mini revolt, demanding that their contracts be revisited before their kick-off against Benin on Tuesday. It is not the first time the payment issue has come up for discussion at a crucial tournament.

Southern Africa has consistently sent only two teams to the African Cup of Nations since 1996. Once again South Africa are there and, finally, after 23 years of independence, Zimbabwe. But neither of them has a hope of reaching the final. Once a nation on the rise in African soccer, South Africa are now going backwards.
The premier league title chase is developing into a battle between the Soweto heavyweights and Western Cape-based clubs. The northerners have had the upper hand in the past, winning five league titles (Sundowns three, Orlando Pirates two) while the Cape has won only once (Santos).

Orlando Pirates might be in need of some fresh ideas to beat Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday’s big clash at Soccer City. That is because both scorers in December 2001’s 3-0 victory (their last win against the old enemy), two-goal hero Lesley Manyathela and Benedict Vilakazi, will not be available this weekend.

The names of the Bafana Bafana men or boys chosen to represent the country in Tunisia next year were finally announced by national coach Ephraim ”Shakes” Mashaba on Thursday. The team may raise a few eyebrows and tempers among the soccer-loving supporters, including those armchair critics, but caution should be taken.

Kaizer Chiefs have made the Coca-Cola Cup their own playground, appearing in all three finals since the competition was reintroduced. With a victory in the first final and a loss last year to Jomo Cosmos, they now face Premier Soccer League rookies Silver Stars on Saturday.

The ghost from Orlando began the season as friendly as Casper – without any of the aggressiveness and hunger it displayed last season on its way to clinching the premiership title. Pirates began the 2002/03 season with six straight wins. This time around they meandered to a loss and several dismal draws.
