”Angel of Soweto” Jackie Maarohanye appeared briefly in a Soweto court on Thursday, later facing police who want to re-charge her in a kidnapping case from a year ago. Ithuteng Trust school principal Maarohanye and three others appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping a Sowetan reporter and driver.

Nine people have been arrested for allegedly using explosives to blow up ATMs, police said on Wednesday. Two were later released. Gauteng police spokesperson Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said four suspects were arrested on Christmas day and appeared in court on Wednesday.

The decision by the Gauteng department of agriculture, conservation and environment to approve the ”unsightly” overhead section of the Gautrain through Centurion is shocking, the Democratic Alliance said on Thursday. Sizwe Matshikiza, spokesperson for the department, said the approval of the project had followed normal processes.

The African National Congress Youth (ANCYL) League handed a memorandum of demands to the National Credit Regulator in Johannesburg on Wednesday in a protest against the blacklisting of youth by credit bureaux. ANCYL president Fikile Mbalula handed the memorandum to three officials and said the blacklisting of the youth was unfair to the students and unemployed of the country.

Johannesburg police on Wednesday promised pupils at a Booysens high school they would monitor their safety following the fatal stabbing of a pupil on the premises. "I will be here all the time with the principal," said newly appointed Booysens Commissioner Rex Qabanisa Mochabi, speaking to pupils at Forest Hill High.

The vigilance of staff has helped combat almost R1-billion in fraud at the Standard Bank since 1999, one of its directors said on Monday. Roy Ross was speaking at the company’s headquarters in Johannesburg, and congratulating the winner of R1-million in the bank’s Fraud Miles programme.
A mere 2 647 taxi operators of more than 135 000 in the country have registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), the Department of Labour said on Monday. Said departmental spokesperson Kgomotso Sebetso: ”It’s not fair that the taxi owners don’t want to comply with the law.”
