Voting got off to a rough start in volatile Haiti as angry mobs stormed voting centres that failed to open on time, with one person dying of a heart attack and another of asphyxia. Several more people were injured or fainted as they were trampled or shoved by crowds that rushed voting centres.

As Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez on Friday stepped up his attacks on what he called the ”genocidal” United States administration, new figures showed that bilateral trade has surged, thanks largely to high oil prices. To cheers from thousands of anti-globalisation activists, Chavez called US President George Bush ”the world’s biggest terrorist” and his administration ”the most perverse, murderous, genocidal, immoral empire” in history.

Activists from across the Americas on Tuesday kicked off an anti-globalisation gathering in Caracas with a march against war marked by slogans blasting the United States president and hailing Venezuela and Cuba’s leftist leaders. Hundreds of Americans took part in the march, including Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a US soldier killed in Iraq.

Hurricane Rita hurled its full fury at Texas and Louisiana on Saturday, as the storm’s potent eyewall ripped ashore, lashing coastlines with a terrifying barrage of near 200kph winds and walls of driving rain. United States authorities stepped up efforts to empty the hurricane-stricken city of New Orleans on Thursday, sending in thousands of troops to confront rampaging looters. President George Bush vowed ”zero tolerance” for armed gangs and other profiteers from the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina.
Florida on Friday mopped up after a deadly bashing from Hurricane Katrina, and braced for another hit as the weather system swirled over the Gulf of Mexico on a track that would take it back to the storm-weary state. At least four people were killed late on Thursday as the hurricane made landfall near Miami.
Hurricane Katrina pounded storm-wary Florida, killing at least three people, leaving about 1,5-million homes without power and collapsing a Miami highway overpass. Hours after the storm slammed ashore in densely populated southeastern Florida, its eye headed out to the Gulf of Mexico early on Friday, but howling winds and pounding rain still battered Miami.
Discovery‘s crew early on Tuesday made final preparations for a predawn return to Earth that will mark the conclusion of the first space shuttle flight since the 2003 Columbia disaster. The seven astronauts closed the payload area’s massive baydoors in preparation for the homebound journey that initially had been scheduled for Monday.
