Top-ranked Roger Federer lost consecutive matches for the first time in four-and-a-half years, falling to number seven Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 4-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5 on Monday at the Masters Cup. It was the defending champion’s first loss in 11 meetings against Gonzalez.
Nepal’s path back to democracy turned rocky on Tuesday as political divisions broke into the open and protesters demanded that legislators move faster to ensure the king can never grab power again. New Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala announced the core of a new, seven-member Cabinet.

A tearful Roger Federer claimed his seventh grand-slam title on Sunday, overcoming an early challenge from unseeded Marcos Baghdatis to win the Australian Open 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2. Federer will try to win his fourth straight major later this year on clay at the French Open — the only grand-slam event he has never won.
South Korea hoped for a favourable response from rival North Korea on Seoul’s latest push to get the North back into six-nation negotiations on nuclear disarmament, but there were signs that the atmosphere was souring on the second day of reconciliation talks on Tuesday.
