Baby-killer accused withdraw bail applications

Three women who confessed to the killing of a baby and burying the body in a yard abandoned their bail applications in court on Wednesday. They appeared in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court in Pretoria, which postponed the case to August 28. The women are 34-year-old Cecilia Mokgabane Seale, Rosinah Show, an aunt, and Thandi Martha Matubane, the midwife.

Mother arrested for drowning baby

Forensic experts exhumed a baby on Tuesday who was drowned and buried in a yard — allegedly by her mother — last year, Pretoria police said. ”I can confirm that forensic experts found the remains of the child in the yard,” Inspector Paul Ramaloko said. He said the child was buried in July last year just after being born.

Sheldean murder case transferred to high court

Andrew Jordaan, the man accused of murdering seven-year-old Sheldean Human, appeared briefly in the Pretoria Regional Court on Wednesday, where his case was transferred to the Pretoria High Court for trial. His trial at the high court will start on August 2. Along with the murder charge, Jordaan now faces charges of kidnapping, rape and possession of dagga.

Mourners bid farewell to Sheldean

Murdered seven-year-old Sheldean Human should not be forgotten, and her death should be used as an instrument for ”change in our communities”, mourners said at a memorial service in Pretoria on Tuesday. Sheldean, a grade two pupil at Laerskool Tuinrand, was found murdered on March 5 after she went missing from her Pretoria Gardens home on February 18.

Students draw attention to race classification

About 11 white students painted their faces black in a bid to be classified as Africans at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday. The group, led by AfriForum CEO Callie Kriel, handed a memorandum to a representative of the President’s office, Elisa Ndlovu. Kriel said the students’ tongue-in-cheek action carried a very serious message.

Aids testing encouraged among inmates

Voluntary testing among prison inmates and correctional services employees was encouraged at the launch of the Department of Correctional Services’ HIV/syphilis-prevalence survey in Pretoria on Monday. Offenders and officials need to know their status because the current 5% of known HIV cases among inmates is most probably incorrect, considering the country’s HIV rate, the department said.
