When the big cat’s away …

This weekend’s Nedbank Golf Challenge has already made the headlines, but it is likely to be remembered mostly for the late withdrawals by big-name stars. First it was world number three and two-time defending champion Jim Furyk withdrawing on ”doctor’s” orders. Then reluctant genius Sergio Garcia said he needed to rest for three months.

Funny thing, this game called golf. The number one player plays the fewest games on offer and he keeps coming back to win, and if he doesn’t, he threatens to win all the time. The rest of the players go through an emotional and physical rollercoaster week in and week out.

Fear and loathing at the ‘old brute’

At the beginning of this week, thousands of kilometres from Oakmont, Pittsburgh, in the United States, a 17-year-old girl from a South African dorpie called Benoni claimed to have had sightings of the Virgin Mary — the mother of Christ. Only seven men of the 178-strong field who teed off at the Oakmont Country Club for the 107th US Open are likely to know where Benoni is.
