Another journalist and a senior media executive have been arrested in Zimbabwe. Raphael Khumalo, general manager of the privately owned Zimbabwe Independent, and reporter Itai Dzamara were arrested on Wednesday, Linda Cook, Khumalo’s lawyer, told the Mail & Guardian Online.
The African Christian Democratic Party on Thursday criticised the SABC for its intention to broadcast the African National Congress’s election manifesto, and the National Action urged President Thabo Mbeki to ”personally see to it” that the SABC does not broadcast the speech he is to make this weekend at the launch of the manifesto.

Two of the country’s foremost media personalities squared off at a Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa tribunal on Friday. <i>Mail & Guardian</i> columnist Robert Kirby had lodged a complaint against SABC broadcaster Jeremy Maggs, following remarks made by Maggs on air in September.

Zimbabwean authorities have been urged to drop charges against 14 people who were arrested for circulating an e-mail message criticising President Robert Mugabe’s economic policies and calling for his departure. This is the first time the country’s authorities have used a law passed last year allowing them to intercept e-mail.

All remaining problems between the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and Gallo Music over the live recording of workers’ songs have been resolved, Cosatu has announced. The Mail & Guardian reported on Friday that Cosatu accused Gallo of trying to ”rip it off” over the venture.

A comprehensive HIV and Aids treatment plan was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday. It seeks to provide at least one anti-retroviral service point in every health district within a year. A long-term aim is to give all South Africans requiring treatment access to the programme in their local municipal area within five years.

The African National Congress on Thursday issued a press statement regarding the position of Deputy President Jacob Zuma with regards to the Hefer Commission of Inquiry, which concludes that there is no reason for Zuma to appear before the commission.
Most Eastern Cape provincial departments have not responded to a request in May from the Public Service Accountability Monitor to provide it with information on disciplinary action taken against those allegedly involved in 409 reported cases of misconduct, corruption and maladministration.
South African jazz guitarist Sandile Shange died in an automobile accident in Durban on Saturday. Shange was a regular performer on Durban stages, most notably that of the Rainbow jazz club, since the Eighties, appearing with luminaries of the jazz scene like his friend Darius Brubeck.

Deputy President Jacob Zuma has reacted to media reports about a "secret briefing" that the National Director for Public Prosecutions, Bulelani Ngcuka, had with black editors in July this year, saying Ngcuka imparted "untruthful" information about him "in a very malicious and despicable manner".
