Davydenko fights to restore reputation

Nikolay Davydenko, the world number four from Russia who remains at the centre of an investigation into a betting scandal, on Tuesday described his treatment by the Association of Tennis Professionals as ”idiotic”. Davydenko recently had a fine, for allegedly not trying at the St Petersburg Open, overturned.

Federer ends Nadal’s winning streak on clay

Roger Federer produced an astonishing turnaround to beat Rafael Nadal for the first time on clay courts in the final of the Hamburg Masters on Sunday. His 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over the French Open champion underlined his belief that he has a chance of winning in Paris in three weeks’ time and to become the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams at the same time.

Marat Safin back with a bang at Dubai Open

Marat Safin returned to the ATP Tour after six months out with a career-threatening knee injury with an outstanding win over world number five Nickolay Davydenko in the first round of the Dubai Open on Tuesday. The former world number one from Russia beat his compatriot 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 despite having felt ”lost” in the first set after such a long absence from competition.

Women tennis stars demand equal money

World number one Lindsay Davenport launched into a criticism of Wimbledon on Monday, the day that equal prize money for women was unexpectedly announced at a Middle East tournament. Dubai is only the third tournament on the world circuit that has equal prize money — the others are the US Open and the Australian Open.
