South African prima ballerina Phyllis Spira has died at the age of 64 in Cape Town, news reports said on March 12. She died in Claremont’s Kingsbury Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Spira had been admitted to hospital earlier in the week for a routine vascular operation and complications set in after the surgery.

Police are investigating a case of crimen injuria in relation to a racist video made by students at the University of the Free State. The video, which caused national outrage, features black university employees on their knees eating food that had apparently been urinated upon by white students.

Two University of the Free State students apologised on Thursday for their involvement in a racist video which has sparked a national outcry. RC Malherbe and Schalk van der Merwe said they acted without malicious intent, and expressed sorrow for the embarrassment they might have caused any individual or group.

The Soul Brothers’ lead singer was arrested at his home in Mofolo Park, Soweto, for assaulting his wife, police said on Wednesday. Spokesperson Inspector Kay Makhubele said police had been looking for David Masondo (58) since February 2. ”A case was opened and a protection order was sought against him by his wife, Nomsa,” he said.
