South African politicians paid tribute on Wednesday to former president PW Botha, who died on Tuesday night at his home in the Western Cape. Messages were received from President Thabo Mbeki, former presidents FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela, former parliamentarian Helen Suzman and many others.

A new dispensing fee for medicine will come into effect from Wednesday, the Department of Health announced in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The new fees were set by the department’s pricing committee, ordered by the Constitutional Court last year to reconsider a fee of 26% of the single exit price, capped at R26.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) could not simply ”turn a blind eye” to the alleged transgressions of its AM Live radio anchor John Perlman, the broadcaster’s CEO, Dali Mpofu, told MPs on Monday. Briefing members of Parliament’s communications portfolio committee, he confirmed Perlman would face a disciplinary inquiry.

The government’s taxi-recapitalisation programme in its current form should be scrapped, taxi owners and drivers demanded in Pretoria on Friday, where thousands marched to the Union Buildings. Traffic was also disrupted in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with reports of roads blocked off and stonings of vehicles.

A two-day transport indaba held in Soweto ended on Monday, with Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe hailing it as a success. "This was a very robust, constructive and historic indaba to improve the transport system in South Africa," the minister told reporters at the conclusion of the indaba, which was held at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus.

South African singer Lebo Mathosa (29) died in an accident east of Johannesburg in the early hours on Monday, her manager, Linzy Cowley, said. Mathosa’s driver apparently lost control of the Toyota Prado in which they were travelling on the N3 highway on the East Rand, and Mathosa died at the scene.

South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chief executive Dali Mpofu’s inquiry into two of his top staff has no basis in the ”blacklisting” report, said the Democratic Alliance on Sunday in reaction to Mpofu’s media announcement of disciplinary proceedings against news chief Snuki Zikalala and SAfm presenter John Perlman.

Billy Masetlha, the former National Intelligence Agency chief, appeared briefly in connection with contravening the Intelligence Services Act in the Hatfield Community Court, Pretoria, on Thursday. His case was postponed to December 8 and 9, when he will make a plea.

The Eastern Cape provincial administration was unable to account for R30,2-billion out of R34,1-billion (88,5%) it spent during 2005/06, the Public Service Accountability Monitor said on Thursday. The Eastern Cape auditor general issued five provincial departments with disclaimers for the 2005/06 financial year. These include the four major service-delivery departments.
