Animals from the Kruger National Park, including ”protected species and even lions”, are being hunted and killed in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve (TPNR) in order to balance the books, according to United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa. He said the hunting has been happening since the boundary fence between the Kruger park and the adjacent TPNR was taken down.
Residents of Stilfontein told stories of skidding cars and moving houses after a large earthquake on Wednesday. "It was terrible. I got so scared," said one resident. Meanwhile, an expert said the earthquake, which drove thousands of miners to the surface at Stilfontein, was "a secondary effect" of mining activity.
A number of buildings had to be evacuated in Stilfontein, near Klerksdorp in the North West, on Wednesday after an earth tremor preliminarily measuring five on the Richter scale. About 3Â 200 miners at DRDGold’s operations near Stilfontein were being evacuated after the tremor. Thirteen miners were injured in the tremor.

The South African National Blood Service is to unveil new models for testing the safety of blood supplies which does not include a racial profile, the organisation said on Monday. The development of a new model follows a furore last year when it became publicly known that race was among a check list of factors that determined the safety of donated blood.

Forty MPs are to be prosecuted for their role in Parliament’s travel scam, the Scorpions announced on Friday. "After considering the evidence and consulting with the affected parties, we have decided to prosecute certain members of Parliament in this matter," spokesperson Sipho Ngwema said.
Former president Nelson Mandela’s only surviving son, Makgatho Mandela (54), has died of Aids. Makgatho had been in a critical condition in the Linksfield hospital in Johannesburg since late November, and Mandela had been spending time at his son’s bedside. ”It is a very sad day for the Mandela family,” said the Inkatha Freedom Party’s Musa Zondi.

An explosion hit a United States military base in the Iraqi city of Mosul on Tuesday, causing multiple casualties. US media reported that 22 people died in the explosion, including US and Iraqi military personnel, and more than 50 were wounded. The White House reacted by saying it will not let violence "derail" democracy in Iraq.

Colin Powell has resigned as American Secretary of State, the department said on Monday. Powell (67), a former general, submitted his resignation to President George Bush on Friday, a senior department official said. The White House will announce the resignations of four members of Bush’s Cabinet on Monday, a spokesperson said.
