The publication of ThisDay newspaper has been suspended until Monday, major stakeholder Nduka Obaigbena said on Tuesday. ”A comprehensive plan to deal with all the debt is being put in place and all debt to staff and others will be cleared over the next few weeks,” Obaigbena said at a press conference in Johannesburg.

In a precedent-setting judgement, a full bench of the Cape High Court ruled on Monday in favour of the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) request to televise Mark Thatcher’s civil case on Tuesday. Thatcher has been implicated in a botched coup in Equatorial Guinea and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Albert Mokoena has quit his position as acting CEO of the South African Football Association (Safa). His resignation was announced by acting Safa president Reuben Mahlalela on Monday. Mokoena has been the subject of media reports concerning his personal life and allegations that charges of intimidation had been laid against him.

Drag queens are most welcome at Johannesburg’s 15th Gay Pride march next weekend, despite media rumours to the contrary, the organisers said on Friday. Metro police had earlier in the week said that drag queens would be prevented from marching, because it is illegal to disguise one’s appearance at a public gathering.
The family of Paul Meintjes of Hertzogville, whose resurrection was predicted by a "prophet" after his death about five weeks ago, has not yet made arrangements to remove the body from the town’s mortuary, mortician Nico Foulds said on Thursday. Meintjes’s body has been kept frozen in the town’s mortuary since July 1.
The body of Leigh Matthews, believed to have been kidnapped almost two weeks ago, was found south of Johannesburg on Wednesday, police confirmed. Johannesburg police spokesperson Superintendent Chris Wilken said she was found in the veld at about 3.30pm.
Gauteng housing minister Nomvula Mokonyane on Monday urged residents of the troubled Diepsloot township north of Johannesburg not to hamper the development of houses at the settlement. She said the recent violence at the township is affecting the government’s plans to provide adequate housing on time.
It is time the African National Congress clarifies the real nature of its relationship with Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF, the Democratic Alliance’s acting leader, Douglas Gibson, said in a statement on Sunday. Weekend newspaper reports said ANC officials had met with Zanu-PF officials in Johannesburg to forge closer political ties.
