A huge fire engulfed the cargo section of Istanbul’s international Atatürk airport on Wednesday. Black smoke billowed high into the air, television footage showed. The fire caused panic at the airport, and authorities were trying to evacuate hundreds of people from nearby terminals.

The rock gods snatched Grammy history from the comeback queen on Wednesday, as perennial favourites U2 took home five trophies while Mariah Carey had to settle for three. ”If you think this is going to go to our head, it’s too late,” U2 frontman Bono said after winning song of the year for Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own.

John Spencer, who plays vice-presidential candidate Leo McGarry on NBC television’s <i>The West Wing</i>, died of a heart attack on Friday, his publicist said. Spencer’s work on the show earned him an Emmy Award for supporting actor in a drama series in 2002, as well as a Golden Globe nomination.
James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the starship Enterprise in the original Star Trek TV series and motion pictures who was famously associated with the command ”Beam me up, Scotty”, died early on Wednesday. He was 85. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease, a friend said.
South African civil society groups came back from Zimbabwe disillusioned about the state of democracy in the country, they said on Tuesday. The six-member delegation said that ”only the most optimistic MDC [Movement for Democratic Change] politicians” could hope for political change through free and fair elections.

Yesterday, South African filmmaker Darrell Roodt’s touching film about a young woman, played by Leleti Khumalo, coming to terms with Aids, has been nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign-language film, it was announced on Tuesday. The Howard Hughes epic The Aviator leads the contenders with 11 nominations.
Kenya handed over a suspected member of the al-Qaeda terror network to United States officials on Wednesday and identified him as Suleiman Abdalla Salim Hemed.
