Heavy rains swept across Gauteng and the Free State on Saturday afternoon, turning roads into rivers. The roof of the Dion store in Alberton caved in during heavy rain, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe. In the Free State, a 10-year-old girl drowned when she was swept down a sewerage trench, provincial police said.

Axed <i>Sowetan</i> sub-editor Llewellyn Kriel will on Monday appeal against the findings of the disciplinary hearing that made him the first South African fired for blogging. Kriel was dismissed when he was found to have brought the company’s name into disrepute through a blog on the <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i>’s <i>Thought Leader</i>.

South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni on Thursday raised the repo rate by 50 basis points following a two-day meeting of the bank’s monetary policy committee. The increase pushes the repo rate to 11%, the prime overdraft rate to 14,5% and the tightening cycle that began in June last year to 400 basis points.

Scottish singer and one-time Eurythmics member Annie Lennox is launching a new charity single titled Sing on Saturday, World Aids Day. The singer — who is a global ambassador for charity Oxfam — will be performing at former president Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Aids-campaign concert in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Nationwide Airlines said on Friday that all its domestic and international flights had been grounded by the country’s Civil Aviation Authority, but did not know how long the ban would last. Nationwide’s spokesperson Rodger Whittle said he did not anticipate that grounding would be a ”long situation”.

Hip-hop MC and TV presenter Ashley Titus (36) — better known as Mr Fat — died on Wednesday morning in Cape Town’s Groote Schuur Hospital of natural causes, the pay-TV music channel MK said. In the 1990s, Titus shot to fame as MC with Cape Flats hip-hop sensation Brasse vannie Kaap.

Former African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Mbulelo Goniwe has been found guilty of sexual harassment by a party-appointed disciplinary committee, the ANC said on Friday. Goniwe was charged with abuse of office by trying to obtain sexual favours from parliamentary intern Nomawele Njongo on October 25 last year.

A Pretoria High Court judge has reserved judgement in the Mail & Guardian‘s legal challenge of a controversial 2005 report by Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana about his investigation into the Oilgate scandal. The M&G wants to have the report overturned and rewritten.
