The government plans to hold countrywide public hearings early next year on the issue of name changes, Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya said on Tuesday. Addressing a media conference in Cape Town, Skweyiya said public hearings on the standardisation of geographical names in South Africa will be held in March 2008.

The naming and renaming of streets and public places in Johannesburg should be after flora and fauna and not people, according to the city’s new naming policy released on Monday. Anyone who wants a place named after a person will have to provide a detailed motivation, including a profile of the person.

Two miners died at Marula Platinum Mine in Burgersfort, Limpopo, during a blast in one of the shafts, the mine said on Wednesday. Marula Platinum Mine’s spokesperson Elsabe Meiring said the incident happened on Tuesday night and no other people were reported injured.

Johannesburg police were on Friday looking for three men driving a blue Volkswagen Polo believed to have been involved in the murder of reggae star Lucky Dube (43). The musician was shot dead in a botched hijacking in Rosettenville at about 8.20pm on Thursday night, said a police spokesperson.

Reggae musician Lucky Dube was shot dead in a hijacking on Thursday in Rosettenville, Johannesburg police said. Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht said the incident took place at about 8.20pm when Dube (43) was driving in the Johannesburg suburb. He was dropping off his son in the area when he was attacked.
