Explosions in Nigeria’s central region killed 32 people on Christmas Eve and six people died in attacks on two churches in the north-east.
Sporadic shooting rang out overnight in the central Nigerian city of Jos, and witnesses said at least one person was killed by soldiers.
Nigeria must address underlying issues of poverty and discrimination if it is to end a cycle of violence, rights groups and diplomats said.
Nigeria has put security forces on alert to prevent reprisal attacks after clashes near the city of Jos which may have left more than 300 people dead.

Nigerian police killed one man on Friday when they fired into a crowd of supporters of the governor of the central state of Plateau, who were protesting against an attempt to impeach him for corruption. Plateau is one of more than a dozen states in Nigeria where a battle for political supremacy between President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is being played out.
