Chocolate maker Cadbury Schweppes announced on Monday an investment in sustainable cocoa production in Ghana, a move intended to guarantee a long-term supply of the most important ingredient used in its signature bars and candies. The investment will affect an estimated one million cocoa farmers located primarily in Ghana.

Gunmen took hostage up to 250 Pakistani schoolchildren in the north-western town of Bannu on Monday after taking refuge in the school following a clash with police, officials said. Violence has spread across Pakistan in recent months, seeping out of remote tribal regions that are sanctuaries for al-Qaeda and Taliban militants and into cities and towns.

Eskom’s monopoly was the main cause of South Africa’s electricity problems and the solution lay in independent power producers (IPP), the DA said on Monday. While provision was made for IPPs to generate up to 30% of South Africa’s total electricity output, it had to be sold to Eskom and not to other users, party MP Hendrik Schmidt told journalists.

YouTube on Thursday began making all of its videos available on the latest-generation cellphones as people increasingly shift to accessing the internet on the go. YouTube for Mobile lets people view any of the popular website’s videos, provided their cellphones can stream the data and are linked to a high-speed 3G network.

Sudan will seek to head the African Union during the continental body’s upcoming summit at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, a Sudanese official said. Sudan’s two previous bids for the AU’s rotating presidency have been unsuccessful due to reservations over Khartoum’s rights record in the western region of Darfur.

The trial of three people accused of the murder of Avhatakali Netshisaulu, son of City Press editor Mathatha Tsedu, was postponed to July 28 at the Johannesburg High Court on Monday. Initially six people faced charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and malicious damage to property.

James Kamte raised his hands in praise after scoring a breakthrough victory with an explosive five-birdie back nine to overhaul his rivals and win the R1,8-million Dimension Data Pro-Am at the Gary Player Country Club on Sunday. In doing so, Kamte also became the first black South African to win on the tough summer swing of the Sunshine Tour.
