It is hard not to resort to clichés when writing about Mauritius: white, sandy beaches, sunny blue skies and swaying palm trees. This Indian Ocean island paradise is the stuff travel brochures are made of. Stepping off a plane filled with eager tourists and a group of honeymooners proudly flashing "just married" T-shirts, it is easy to see how tourism has become the main source of income.

A significant amount of resources has been channelled into Africa since the Millennium Development Goals were adopted in 2001. Between 2000 and 2005 an estimated $97-billion has reached the continent through official development assistance. African governments themselves have set aside various percentages of their budgets for expenditure in priority sectors to effect positive change in the lives of the poor.

It was unlikely that grounded airline Nationwide would be given permission for take-off to London on Sunday night, said the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Inspectors had spent most of the day examining the Boeing 767 the airline intended using on the flight, said CAA aircraft safety executive manager Obert Chakarisa.

Wits University played to a 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows in a Premier Soccer League match played at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon. There was no score at half-time. Wits failed to maintain their winning momentum after thrashing Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 last week at the same venue.

Chris Gayle and Runako Morton scored half-centuries in West Indies’ 110-run win over Zimbabwe in the second one-day international on Sunday. Gayle scored 58 before retiring injured and Morton hit 79 as the visitors levelled the five-match series at 1-1.

South Africa’s Trevor Immelman won the 27th edition of the Nedbank Golf Challenge on Sunday, in spite of bogeying the final three holes at the Gary Player Country Club. He outplayed England’s Justin Rose, who blew up with a double-bogey six at the last, in what turned into a nervy two-horse race between the two players in the final round.

South African cleric Desmond Tutu was on Sunday awarded one of Germany’s most prestigious honours, the Marion Doenhoff Prize for International Reconciliation and Understanding. The retired Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town has become ”a symbol for peace and justice in the world”, German Economic Assistance Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul said.

Having two presidents — of the country and the African National Congress (ANC) — could cause tensions and instigate reactions unless properly managed, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) said on Sunday.
