More than one billion trees have been planted around the world in 2007, with Ethiopia and Mexico leading in the drive to combat climate change, a United Nations report said Wednesday. The Nairobi-based UN Environment Programme said the mass tree planting will help mitigate effects of pollution and environmental deterioration.

The Johannesburg city council is investigating the deaths of about 200 ducks at Zoo Lake in Parkview, spokesperson Nthatise Modingoane said on Wednesday. He said the ducks had died sometime last week and that two possible causes were being investigated. These were hail and botulism bacteria, which kill fauna.

South Africa’s targeted CPIX inflation rate quickened to 7,3% in the year to October from 6,7% in September, data showed on Wednesday, above forecasts. Statistics South Africa also said that the all-items consumer price index (CPI) increased by an annual rate of 7,9%, compared with 7,2% in September.

Japan’s future dentists may soon be able to better appreciate patients’ pain by training on a humanoid robot that can mumble "ouch" when the drill hits a nerve. The robot, resembling an attractive young woman with long black hair and a pink sweater, can also listen to instructions and react to pain by moving her eyes or hands.

A 24-year-old Gauteng woman was found buried in a shallow grave 54m from her boyfiend’s KwaZulu-Natal home on Tuesday afternoon, police said on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe the grave was found at the Qakwini Reserve in Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Australia’s Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd arrived in the nation’s capital on Wednesday to choose his new Cabinet, aides said, as outgoing John Howard and his vanquished team cleared out their desks. Rudd (50) stormed to power in a landslide election victory on Saturday that wiped out Howard’s conservative government after almost 12 years in office.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf stepped down as army chief on Wednesday and will be sworn in as a civilian leader for a second five-year term on Thursday. Pay-TV newcomer Telkom Media has purchased a 49 percent shareholding in a Namibian free-to-air channel called One Africa Television. “Linking up with other free-to-air operators in Africa has benefits for advertisers as we are expanding the potential advertising customer base,” said Telkom Media CEO Mandla Ngcobo.<
