A bolstered United Nations-African Union force charged with bringing peace to Sudan’s ravaged Darfur region ”may be” operational by early next year, the head of the mission said on Wednesday. Rodolphe Adada made the announcement during the inauguration of the new force’s headquarters in Darfur’s main city of Al-Fasher.

Mpumalanga-based Sipho Ngomane aims to stamp his authority at the Nedbank Soweto Marathon on Sunday. After his Comrades Marathon victory two years ago, Ngomane seemed to fade owing to a spate of injuries. He finished eighth in his attempt to defend his down-run title earlier this year.

The scandal over a French group accused of trying to illegally fly African children from Chad to Europe will not affect the deployment of a European peace force in eastern Chad. France has troops stationed in Chad and will provide roughly half of a European Union peacekeeping force.

Gold Fields announced on Wednesday that two employees lost their lives in the morning in an underground accident at the number four shaft of Kloof Gold Mine, near Westonaria. Two other mine employees were injured, one seriously. The four were part of a 10-man team working in a stope on 41 level, approximately 3Â 000m below surface.

Broad-based price increases in South Africa’s economy showed there was a problem that needed to be ”handled”, Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni said on Tuesday. Speaking in Johannesburg, he also warned that, in general, faster inflation meant tighter monetary policy.

United States warships are monitoring a Japanese tanker that was hijacked by pirates last weekend off the coast of Somalia. "The pirates are still in control of the ship. They are believed to be armed," Noel Choong, the head of the International Maritime Bureau’s Malaysia-based Piracy Reporting Centre, said.

Russian prosecutors labelled as a ”terrorist” act a bomb explosion that killed eight and injured more than 20 passengers in the city of Togliatti on Wednesday. They opened a criminal investigation into the attack, Russian news agencies reported, three hours after the early-morning explosion.

A Chinese mountaineering official will have the unenviable task of trying to prevent robberies on the roof of the world after a spate of equipment thefts, officials said on Wednesday. The official will be deployed at a breathtaking altitude of 6 600m after a record season this year saw 520 people reaching Mount Everest’s 8 848m summit but also complaints of stealing.
