Insurers adjust for Road Accident Fund limits

With stringent limits now applying to the Road Accident Fund to limit how much one can claim in injuries from a negligent driver, it may be good idea to take out additional insurance cover in case one is seriously injured in a road accident. The public should be concerned about several changes within the Road Accident Fund Amendment Bill.

Sending money home?

Funded by FinMark Trust and DFID, a new information leaflet and corresponding web page for people in the United Kingdom sending money home to family in South Africa was launched at an event at South Africa House at the beginning of May. A booklet for people working in South Africa who wish to send money to Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique or Swaziland was also unveiled.

Dodgy financial advisers named

Before using a financial adviser, it is worth checking if he or she has been ”S-referenced” by the Life Office’s Association (LOA). The system aims to protect consumers from advisers who are considered unfit to be marketing the products of the long-term-insurance industry. The system is one of self-regulation operated by the LOA.

NZ rugby officials defend fog-bound final

New Zealand rugby officials have defended the decision to go ahead with the fog-bound Super 14 rugby final in Christchurch on Saturday, but said the match would have been postponed if it was any thicker. The match was reduced to a farce at times in the pea-souper that shrouded Jade Stadium, where the Canterbury Crusaders emerged from the fog as 19-12 victors over the Wellington Hurricanes.

England beat Sri Lanka by six wickets

England beat Sri Lanka by six wickets on Sunday after a career-best performance from paceman Liam Plunkett gave his team an easily attainable victory target on day four of the second Test at Edgbaston. England, led by Kevin Pietersen’s 142 off 157 balls, reached 295 in reply to Sri Lanka’s first-innings 141.

NUM: Mbeki should open up succession debate

President Thabo Mbeki should open the succession debate, the National Union of Mineworker’s (NUM) president Senzeni Zokwana said on Saturday. Speaking at NUM’s 12th congress at Midrand, he said this would dispel perceptions that some leaders, especially African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma, were being marginalised.
