Olympics organisers target rival logos

Spectators attending the Athens Olympics could be forcibly removed from stadiums if they wear clothing bearing ”obvious logos of competitive companies to sponsors”, according to rules released by games organisers. The restriction will extend to hats, T-shirts, bags and other ”commercial items”.

Armstrong still worried about ‘quiet’ Ullrich

Lance Armstrong’s most-feared rival has been quiet so far at the Tour de France, but the five-time champion is expecting a roar by the mountain stages. Jan Ullrich, a 30-year-old German who won the 1997 Tour, rode largely in the Texan’s shadows in an uncommonly nervy and crash-marred first week across flat swaths of Belgium and northern France.

Schumacher looks to equal record

Even with the renewal of a former rivalry, Michael Schumacher still came out on top. Now he looks to return to his native Germany in two weeks with a chance to equal a season record. After his 10th victory of 2004 at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, Schumacher can equal the record of 11 wins in a season at the German Grand Prix on July 25.

Govt, public service unions lock horns

The government has confirmed it has declared a dispute after ”very little progress” with the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council after two months of wage negotiations. The Public Servants Association said the government’s action comes as a surprise, because normally the unions are the first to declare a dispute.

Bush takes aim at ‘dream team’

Republican strategists expect George Bush to be trailing in the polls by at least 15 per cent by next month following the announcement of John Edwards as running mate of Democrat challenger John Kerry. The Democrats are also expected to win a large polls ‘bounce’ from their Boston convention at the end of July.

Trial of suspected Zim mercenaries delayed

The trial of 70 suspected mercenaries detained in Zimbabwe for allegedly plotting a coup in Equatorial Guinea, has been postponed to allow for a South African court to hear an appeal for their expatriation to Pretoria. The men face possible extradition to Equatorial Guinea, where they could face the death sentence.

Swazi police break up opposition meeting

Swazi police assaulted five opposition supporters on Saturday and prevented an outlawed political party from holding a rally to celebrate the 21st anniversary of its creation. The party’s secretary said from his hospital bed that he and other supporters were beaten with batons after refusing a police order to disperse.
