Schumacher looks to equal record

Even with the renewal of a former rivalry, Michael Schumacher still came out on top. Now he looks to return to his native Germany in two weeks with a chance to equal a season record. After his 10th victory of 2004 at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, Schumacher can equal the record of 11 wins in a season at the German Grand Prix on July 25.

Chiefs go to Vodacom final

Kaizer Chiefs went through to the final of the Vodacom Challenge Cup when they beat TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo 9-8 on penalties at Mmabatho Stadium on Sunday. The two teams, who met in last year’s final, which Chiefs won 3-2 on penalties again, were level at 0-0 after regulation time.

British driver Jensen Button has told his BAR-Honda team that they need to make big strides if they want to keep up their bid to finish in the top three of the formula one world championship this season. Button — hunting for a maiden victory — finished fourth in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday.

Gruelling race awaits Berg river paddlers

Paddlers taking part in the isuzu Berg River Canoe marathon face a potentially gruelling time as water levels are said to be ”bitterly low”. The usually reliable Cape weather has proved unkind for the second year running, failing to provide enough rainfall ahead of Wednesday morning’s scheduled start.

Bush takes aim at ‘dream team’

Republican strategists expect George Bush to be trailing in the polls by at least 15 per cent by next month following the announcement of John Edwards as running mate of Democrat challenger John Kerry. The Democrats are also expected to win a large polls ‘bounce’ from their Boston convention at the end of July.

Govt, public service unions lock horns

The government has confirmed it has declared a dispute after ”very little progress” with the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council after two months of wage negotiations. The Public Servants Association said the government’s action comes as a surprise, because normally the unions are the first to declare a dispute.

Trial of suspected Zim mercenaries delayed

The trial of 70 suspected mercenaries detained in Zimbabwe for allegedly plotting a coup in Equatorial Guinea, has been postponed to allow for a South African court to hear an appeal for their expatriation to Pretoria. The men face possible extradition to Equatorial Guinea, where they could face the death sentence.
