AC Milan are desperate to atone for their Istanbul nightmare when they face Liverpool in next Wednesday’s Champions League final rematch in Athens. Milan looked certain to beat Liverpool in the 2005 final after taking a 3-0 lead at half-time. But Milan inexplicably imploded in a bizarre six-minute spell in the second half.

AC Milan are desperate to beat Liverpool in the Champions League final to erase the memory of their nightmare defeat at the hands of the Merseysiders in the Istanbul final two years ago. Milan set up the chance for revenge with a superb 3-0 semifinal, second-leg victory over Liverpool’s Premiership rivals Manchester United on Wednesday for a 5-3 aggregate victory.

Mauro Bergamasco scored a dramatic late try as Italy beat Wales 23-20 in Rome on Saturday to record an unprecedented second win in a Six Nations campaign. However, the match ended in controversy when the full-time whistle blew just after Wales had declined an opportunity to kick what could have been a score-levelling penalty.

Points penalty weighs on Milan

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted on Sunday his club’s eight-point penalty for match-fixing makes them rank outsiders for the Serie A title. Milan beat fellow offenders Lazio 2-1 in their first match of the new season to reduce their deficit to minus five points, but they failed to make any ground on title rivals Inter Milan and Roma, who both recorded wins on Saturday.

Fiorentina, Lazio get Serie A reprieve

Juventus’s relegation from the top-flight of Italian football was confirmed on Tuesday but Lazio and Fiorentina were reinstated after a final appeal into the match-fixing scandal that has rocked Serie A. Fiorentina and Lazio were both restored to the top division, having originally been demoted to Serie B for their part in the scandal.

Two-goal Toni repays Lippi faith

Luca Toni repaid the faith shown in him by coach Marcello Lippi by scoring twice in Italy’s 3-0 win over Ukraine in the World Cup quarterfinals on Friday. The victory sealed a place in the last four of the tournament, where they will meet hosts Germany, a repeat of the 1982 final. Italy won that match 3-1 and were crowned world champions for a third time.

Italy cruise safely into last 16

Italy moved into the last 16 of the World Cup and sent the Czech Republic home after defeating their Group E rivals 2-0 on Thursday. Marco Materazzi put Italy in front with a towering first-half header before fellow substitute Filippo Inzaghi finished a breakaway attack in the 87th minute to ensure the Azzurri finished top of the group.

Poles axed by plucky Ecuador

Ecuador began their World Cup campaign with a precious 2-0 win over Group A rivals Poland on Friday. Carlos Tenorio broke the deadlock in the 24th minute with a stooping header and Agustin Delgado made the points safe with a simple tap-in 10 minutes from time. Poland enjoyed plenty of possession but were short on ideas in the final third of the pitch.

The Italy soccer team will find themselves in familiar surroundings when they arrive at their World Cup accommodation in Duisburg, Germany. Antonio Pelle, an Italian expatriate from the southern region of Calabria, jointly owns the four-star Landhaus Milser hotel and has gone to great lengths to ensure his illustrious guests don’t feel homesick.

Nadal reaches 50 not out as Federer clash looms

Rafael Nadal clinched his 50th successive victory on clay in Rome on Thursday with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Britain’s Tim Henman to reach the Rome Masters quarterfinals as he closed in on Guillermo Vilas’s all-time record on the surface. If Nadal successfully defends his title on Sunday, he will equal the record set by Argentine Vilas who managed 53 straight wins on clay in 1977.
